I used to be against any animation movie that wasn't created by Pixar. What I used to see was corporate Hollywood churning out movies for a profit. Years ago, I was appalled by Over The Hedge which had more music montages than I could handle; that's not good for an eighty-three minute movie. The Shrek sequels were no better as I noticed that Dreamworks seemed to be plugging in rock sequences that we all loved from the end of the first Shrek movie. What was offbeat and fresh became dull and repetitive.
Those ideals stuck with me for a few years. Every year, I would get excited to see the new Pixar trailers and feel something real throughout the entire movie. But about a month ago, I realized that the one Pixar film I hadn't watched was Cars. Being the completist that I am I placed it at the top of my Netflix Queue and watched after it arrived at my house. I watched the entire movie to come to the conclusion that even Pixar can make a dull movie, so I eased up and gave welcomed other animation studios back into my life.
I have to say that I was still skeptical when seeing the trailer for Rio during the Super Bowl, but I'm glad I gave this movie a chance. I really think that Blue Sky Studios and 20th Century Fox have a winner on their hands with Rio. I wasn't sure how Jesse Eisenberg's, Tracy Morgan's or Will.I.Am's voices would play out in this, but I have to say that the studio did pretty well at matching the actors' voices to the characters.
The movie itself was a lot of fun as the music score was upbeat and made me feel Rio De Janeiro's vibrant culture. The ambience and the animated crowds expressions made me feel the excitement that can come from waiting for something as massive as Carnival.
I think a lot of people are going to enjoy this movie and it will stay a favorite for some as the movie is definitely fresh and memorable. Parents taking their children to see the movie won't find themselves rolling their eyes for an hour and a half as the jokes and drama are on point and at the very least the fusion of music and animated Rio De Janeiro will make a lot of people consider visiting Brazil for their next vacations.
