Does anybody remember when Y or W was a vowel?

In kindergarten, my class was taught that five vowels and the two letters that were sometimes considered vowels "Y and W". I've asked a few people about this and none of them know what the hell I'm talking about. It's like everybody's mind was erased after kindergarten. They skipped my mind, though. Why? I don't know, maybe I was absent with chicken pox or pink eye that day and every other kid in my school forgot that "W" was sometimes a vowel. As I researched the web, I found that people born in the fifties don't remember "Y or W" even being mentioned as a possible vowel. HELP, what kind of rink-a-dink school was I going attending?
